A Bite of History

"It’s hard to believe that just 20 years ago the Worldwide Web was merely a diagram. Sir Tim Berners Lee created a wonkish document dubbed “Information Management: A Proposal" and created the infrastructure a lot of us depend on to a make a living." (Dignal, 2009)

The Web has come a long way since then. This timeline shows the past and projected evolution of the Web, and the increased public involvement in its use. (Spivak, 2007)

Web 1.0 What's the big deal?  [ early 1980s to early 2000s ]

Technically speaking the term 'Web 1.0' is a reference to the early years of the Internet, from its inception until the early 2000s. Originally, the Internet was seen as a space to bring people together, it was envisioned as a collaborative space. Only problem was, it didn't live up to this promise with most of the applications on the 'net' being relegated to the webpage/website format, and on the whole you weren't able to change content on the 'net' or add to what was out there in cyberspace.

Things started to change at the start of the new millenium, with new applications appearing that finally lived up to the promise of what the Internet was cable of being and doing. It was these new applications that made people realise the true potential of the Internet.

In 2004, Dale Dougherty of O'Reilly Media observed what was happening in cyberspace, and coined term the 'Web 2.0' a label that stuck!

So what is Web 2.0?  [ 2004 to present day ]

For the technically minded, view this YouTube about Web 2.0 from UTechTips.

Typically, Web 2.0 is all about the applications on the Internet that are interactive, collaborative, user friendly, useful, and in some cases social. When most people think of Web 2.0 they think of such things as blogs and Wikis, but of course, there's much more to it then that. For example such applications as YouTube, TeacherTube, Twitter, Facebook, Wikipedia, are Web 2.0 applications because they all share one important quality 'change-ability', as in anyone can contribute to their content.
