WIKIS 4U What’s a Wiki? A wiki is a web page, or set of pages, that allows multiple users to add to, and comment on, its contents. It is the basic building block of an online database that encourages collaborative input. Use the WIKI QUICK LINKS to visit sites that provide definitions and more detailed information about wikis. Famous Wiki Sites Ever wondered how Wikipedia got its name? It’s a wiki encyclopedia – a database of knowledge. So why is a wiki encyclopedia different from other online databases? A wiki is ideal for creating a modern encyclopedia. Traditionally, encyclopedias required annual updates in the form of year books. Remember those from your school library. First, there’s the encyclopedia volumes A-Z (that’s where everyone looks for information), and then there at the end, or sometimes on the shelf below, there’s a series of year books. Always in good condition because they are rarely touched, and why … well that’s another story … A wiki encyclopedia is current and immediate. The point I am trying to make is that a wiki encyclopedia is a living encyclopedia. It’s constantly being added to and updated … not just once a year, not by one person, nor by a small team, but by anyone, at anytime, anywhere in the world. A wiki encyclopedia is interactive. And, a wiki encyclopedia allows dialogue. Users and contributors can comment on, add to and correct entries. A wiki encyclopedia is hyperlinked and cross-referenced. Yes, there’s more ... While a year book might provide references to the original volumes, the original volumes couldn’t provide references to the year books. Detailed cross-referencing is possible in a wiki encyclopedia.
