CYBER ISSUES 4U

We've looked at a range of new and exciting Web 2.0 applications for education, but it is still evident that ...

"… many parents and teachers, ... are feeling irrelevant and uninformed about their children’s technology-rich world and powerless when it comes to knowing how to protect them from themselves and others.” (Freyvaud, 2008, p. 94)

What are the issues?

I'm sure you've heard parents and teachers talk about all or some of these ...

  • online collaboration
  • plagiarism
  • data reliability, security and integrity,
  • cyber safety and privacy.

“It is important to find an appropriate balance as we consider issues with technology usage and cyber safety in particular.” (Freyvaud, 2008, p. 95)

So let's take a closer look at some of these issues.

Online Collaboration

According to Sproull et.al., "many perceive the Internet to be a private and anonymous space, which can contribute to 'disinhibited' behaviour"... causing "many people to behave in cyberspace in a way in they would not normally that they easily lose their inhibitions" (1986). This results in people confiding personal information more readily and quickly than they would in 'face-to-face' interactions, and by taking social greater risks (Lai, 2005). Educating students regarding the problems that can go hand-in-hand with this type of collaboration is imperative.

Data Issues

Our Data Security forum looks at a range of data related issues.

Cyber security education encourages students to employ good computer “hygiene.” Students learn which emails and web browsers they should open and the types of programs and practices that will keep their files safe.

The Information Technology for Management Glossary defines data integrity as 'the accuracy and accessibility of data', while reliability is a quality of being dependable. Exploring cyber reliability highlights the interconnectedness of a number of cyber issues like data integrity and security.

Plagiarism

Plagiarism - the plague of our existence - embraces a raft of behaviours by which a writer might take credit for the words or ideas of others. Check out this definition on Wikipedia.

... and the web makes it just so much easier. So what can we do?

Safety and Privacy

Cyber Safety education focuses on teaching children how to protect themselves from potential cyber harm. In short, cyber safety is focused on teaching online behaviors that will protect the physical well-being of online users.

Many Internet users are concerned about the risks that the Internet poses to their privacy.
