PUBLISHING TOOLS 4U The Internet has allowed anyone to create material that can be viewed by others almost anywhere. The dispersal of information is not just limited to professional publishers anymore. Anyone, anywhere can create content and publish it online. Pretty amazing, hey? (And just a bit scary!) While YouTube is often surrounded by controversy, the benefits of online streaming video should not be overlooked. It's a matter of making sure that your students are Cyberwise. Want a more censored alternative? Try TeacherTube or YouTube Edu, which hosts videos from teachers and educational institutions around the world. It's a great place to look for educational clips and hints from other professionals that are 'usable' in the classroom. (In fact, you might find a clip from me there!) A variety of options are available to educators with all levels of technical abilities. For the technical novice try Yola; it is a free site where even the most technologically challenged can create an effective website (Want proof? You are on one now!). Just select your template and colour, copy in your content and you are set to go. If you are a more confident online designer you might want to consider 000webhost.com; here you to upload any site you have created on an ad free hosting service. 21Classes allows is a slightly different way to publish online. Rather than having each student in the class create an independent blog, 21Classes allows each student to make a blog that is linked to each of the other students in the class. Why not read the Letters to the Editor on Mrs Aubertin‘s Classroom Blog. Or take a look at the stories published on WritingReal. Other options for creating content online, like wikis or blogs, can be viewed in the Web Tools 4U area of this site. Now you have the skills, who owns your creations? Copyright for material presented online needs to be considered.
